High Energy Piping Assessment

A detailed positional survey and subsequent assessment of the high energy piping of a unit at a power station was carried out. Hangers had been observed to have bottomed out and metallurgical analysis showed a possibility of wear, possibly due to creep. The positional survey was completed by a contractor under instruction from K.J. Beer. The resulting positions were used to construct a detailed piping model in Caesar II. A similar model of the original piping design was also developed. Both models were assessed against ASME B31.1 and fatigue and creep hot spots were determined.

Specifically, the analysis included:

  1. Assessment of the original design to ASME B31.1 (Caesar II).
  2. Assessment of one line cold and one line hot 'as is' to ASME B31.1 (Caesar II).
  3. Identification of fatigue/creep hot spots.
  4. Detailed assessment of hot spots using FEA.
